Energy and Buildings

We look for ways to reduce energy use and report waste in campus facilities. Renewable energy, conservation strategies, policy submissions are all topics that are discussed and reported on. Sustainable office practices will be a new focus for this group.
Curriculum

Members of this committee work to increase academic coverage of sustainability
issues across disciplines. Increasing the number of sustainability-related courses,
applying various aspects of sustainability to coursework, and increasing the number
of internship opportunities for students are all ways to achieve campus sustainability.
University Investments
Chair: Eric Ripley emripley@syr.edu
This committee's focus is to address the management of the SU endowment and to move management towards sustainability. We have worked with SU administration to encourage endowment managers to vote proxies regarding environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues of concern at portfolio companies.
Green Purchasing and Recycling

This committee is committed to working on increasing the amount of waste SU recycles. By increasing visibility of the importance of recycling across campus, working with physical facilities, administration, faculty and students, this committee hopes to make recycling a priority in the campus community.
Food Services and Composting

This committee is currently working on implementing a composting system in SU's residence halls, working to reduce carryout food container waste and other food sustainability issues in the campus community.
Transportation
Chair: Pete King pdking@syr.edu
This committee's work focuses primarily on campus commuting by working to increase bike and bus usage through improved service, awareness and safety.
Student Life and Campus Culture
Chair: Jeanne Steffes jsteffes@syr.edu
This committee works to promote practices and student educational strategies that foster self-sustaining and healthier environmental, social and economic systems. Through the promotion of sustainable living programs, recycling efforts, Earth Day community clean-ups, -Ten Tons of Love Program, Social Justice Awareness programs,
World AIDS Day, governmental process and systems awareness, awareness programming for diversity and inclusiveness, and programming on building effective-change skills through the development of sustainability-themed action campaigns such as healthier ecosystems, healthier economies and social justice.
